Germany attributes Russia for Leipzig’s August 2026 drone incident
In August 2026, three drones carrying explosive devices and detonators were found at Germany’s Leipzig airport. Leipzig airport serves an important logistical role, as it “is used by Germany’s military and Nato allies for the transport of military goods and also serves as a base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines – which carries most of the country’s aerial cargo.”
Last months incident reflects a broader pattern in Germany. Numerous drone sightings have taken place over the last year at select airports, military and industrial sites. Germany’s prominent role as a supporter of Ukraine under Merz has further intensified suspicions surrounding the incidents.
On September 2nd, Germany attributed the drones to Russia’s hybrid operations across Europe as per Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. Moscow’s response to Germany’s allegations include fierce denial and further accusations that evidence was planted. No evidence has since been provided by Moscow to support these claims.
Germany’s response so far has included the following to increase pressure on Russia…
- The ordered closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn
- Termination of the contract for the Russian House in Berlin
- Announcements by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephulke regarding entry controls for Russian nationals
- Announcements vowing to increase pressure on Moscow’s shadow fleet
NATO and EU members have expressed their solidarity with Germany while simultaneously condemning Russia. France’s president Emmanuel Macron, Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni, and Canadian prime minister Mark Carney have issued public statements.
