Iran, the Blame Game, and America’s Fragile Water Infrastructure
As more details emerge about the extent of the cyber attacks on water infrastructure across the country, which U.S. intelligence agencies suspect are orchestrated by Iranian hackers, state and federal officials are playing the blame game– and in doing so, highlighting further the soft underbelly of America’s critical infrastructure.
Who Dunnit
Given Iran’s cyber attacks on water infrastructure in 2023, the lack of apparent financial motive in this latest event, and Tehran’s mounting aggressiveness in response to renewed American strikes, the intelligence community’s assessment that Iran is behind this seems sound.
Reading into the Fallout
The fact that Trump immediately went on the offensive against Michigan, a focal point of the recent attack (not to mention the past years’ intense counter ICE protests) and terrain of Democratic governor Tim Walz, is worth reading into.
At the minimum, the spat appears to have been a way for the Trump administration to deflect an apparent Iranian win. Something like: “No, it’s not a big deal– it’s just a malfunctioning democratic state.” It is also likely a psychological tactic on the part of the Iranians, who have proven to be adept at lighting fires in American domestic fault lines. Recall the lego episode.
The Infrastructure, Though.
From a more pragmatic point of view, we are once again reminded of the vulnerability of our critical infrastructure. If Iranian hackers can mess with our water system, if only to sow domestic discord, one can only imagine what’s possible. An intense overhaul of the IT infrastructure behind the physical systems that sustain life in the U.S. must go alongside the advancements that are being made in our forward military architecture. Investing in sexy new drones to fight off an invasion of Taiwan means desperately little if Chinese hackers could shut off New York City’s taps. They are one and the same.
