The F-16 Flies With AI | Stars and Stripes

The Air Force’s VENOM program put an F-16 in the air with AI at the controls, reports Jennifer Svan of Stars and Stripes. In fact, six modified F-16s at Eglin Air Force Base now fly with autonomy software layered atop unchanged core avionics. A human pilot still commands takeoff and retains override authority. That keeps certification timelines short while testing expands.

Incremental by Design

This is not a leap to fully un-crewed fighters. Instead it’s really reducing everything down to one switch between human and machine control. The goal is to generate flight-test data at scale. The idea is that six aircraft flying repeated sorties will accumulate far more edge-case behavior than a single experimental airframe. 

Lineage 

The program builds directly on the X-62 VISTA, whose 2024 human-versus-AI engagement proved autonomous maneuvering could hold up against a live adversary. In this case, VENOM’s contribution stresses repeatability and an actual path toward use in the field.

The Objective

Pilots overseeing teams of autonomous aircraft is the goal. In that world, the pilot role moves to management rather than straight control. VENOM’s next phase, testing multiple AI agents in live flight, will be the more telling indicator of whether this can scale.
