Technical Problems
- New SWJ users attempting to login with legit accounts are experiencing Access Denied errors. Read this for cause & resolution.
-
We had hellish availability between August 4 and ~10, until we finally settled into a new server, host, management service, etc. In the hiccups during that period, we served some incomplete pages that may persist in your browser cache. By now, most should have cleared out as things flush and update in cache over time automatically. But if you are still having problems, you can refresh them now by clearing your cache.
- Firefox is particularly susceptible to this. In Firefox, press Ctrl+F5 to reload and over-write cache for your current page.
-
Or you can clear cache completely through your browser settings.
- Firefox Tools/Options > Options > Advanced > Network > Clear Now
- IE Internet Options > General > Browsing History – Delete > check Temporary Internet Files, uncheck everything else, Delete
- Or consult your browser documenation or sites like this.
- Things still may be lousy after clearing cache, but then you know that's on us right now, not yesterday.
-
BAD LINKS. We have many of them. There are several flavors.
-
Technical causes. We think these problems are mostly gone now, but know they were a real issue prior to Aug 11 so FYI:
- Your browser may be caching bad copies of things we've already fixed. See the bullet point above to clear cache. This was a know issue during
- Other bad links are a different technical problem — we had work done specifically to preserve external links to our old pages, and that is just not working (yet?). We hope to fix that by solving the broken redirects of old URLs to the new item locations. This also effects some of our internal cross-references, in particular the entries in the Journal Issue tables of contents.
-
Content causes. We may just have some bad links in our content.
- Many news links expire after about 60 days, so a lot of the older Roundup links are dead and that is just the way it is.
- There are many other old links in our site that we simply need to update, particularly in the Library, and we'll get to them when we can.
- Your reports of bad links are welcome and helpful, if you send us the URL you were on and the target URL that is not working. [email protected]
-
Technical causes. We think these problems are mostly gone now, but know they were a real issue prior to Aug 11 so FYI:
- User comments on SWJ from ~8/1-8/4 are still in the ether. They're not lost, just not here yet. So sorry. We'll get them out of the ether.
Content Work TBD
All the existing SWJ content has been migrated, but we've got a lot of post-move-in manual data work to do to update the legacy format into our new container. That will take some time. We touched on that in our Welcome to SWJ 2.0 blog post. Here is a current list of our open items.
- Only the 2011 PDF Journals are in the system, and those are partially impaired by the URL redirects problem noted above. Note that all articles in the Journal Issues from 2008 and later are also published individually in the system. In the interim, you can find them through the search function (top right) or by browsing our archives.
- The new system has much better support for guest author bylines and author archives. Over time, we'll move the author's byline, bio, etc. in the old content out of the article out of the body content and into the new system. We will reach out to past authors soon to provide info on how to submit any updates you want to provide. In the interim, too much stuff will be displayed under the SWJ Editors system byline, but you can see the real author byline in the beginning of the entry body.
- We will continue to publish Journal Issues as a PDF. Our new Journal Issues feature an automatic index of the month's individual articles, plus the cover, table of contents, and download link for the PDF Journal when it exists for a given month. The index portion is live now, and we should have the PDFs added within a week or so. We hope to bring more features into future Journal Issues.
- The way-back issues of the Journal (2005-2007) are only available here for now, and the articles are only in the PDF. We will eventually get those articles into the system as individual articles and a complete issue.
- The new system will support us publishing Journal Articles fully in-the-system rather than as PDF links. We hope to be doing that within a few weeks. Readers will have the option of generating print-optimized or PDF versions on-the-fly, content will be more searchable, and we'll be able to offer full length Journal Articles via a Kindle feed. We are not sure how far back into the legacy articles we'll update things, but we should be rid of PDFs for future articles.
- Of course there are tons of little things that need doing for your usability and our efficiency. Kai zen, and all that.
For a while after moving into the new site, we will be overwhelmed with the things that we already know need fixing and the obvious errors. If you see something you think we've missed, you can contact us. Once we get moved in, we will be activating a variety of options for SWJ members to better influence the site, recommend content, identify needed updates, etc. to make it more of a group effort and better represent the expertise that is resident in our community.
