Drug Cartel Drones shot down by USNORTHCOM
U.S. military uses laser to shoot down 3 cartel drones at southern border, Pentagon says
On the week of August 24th, the U.S. military encountered three unmanned aircraft systems along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Southern border Joint Task Force, a unit of USNORTHCOM, took down the drones with an “Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser system”.
It is alleged that the drones were operated by drug cartels but it is has not been attributed to a specific group due to secruity purposes. USNORTHCOM stated that the hostile drones were in “support of activities posing a physical threat to U.S. military personnel”. Various cartels have utilized weaponized drones within Mexico to attack rivals, however they have not been employed in the U.S. Cartels further leverage drones for surveillance purposes “”to support their other illegal criminal activities, including smuggling of narcotics, smuggling of persons, firearms, and other illicit goods.” as per Austin Doctor. Doctor is an associate professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the director of strategic initiatives at the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Cente.
