Patrick Tucker of Defense One reports how Zelenskyy’s firing of popular defense minister Mikhailo Fedorov has triggered street protests and heavy negative domestic media coverage. Allies have criticized the move as self-defeating mid-war.

The dismissal followed the ouster of prime minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, part of a broader reshuffle reported on by the Economist. Fedorov, 35, previously built Ukraine’s celebrated Diia digital-services app before pivoting to defense in January.

The official reason: Zelenskyy cited a breakdown in “dialogue” between Fedorov and the army, pointing to procurement decisions made outside General Staff channels, particularly on artillery shells.

Fedorov’s rebuttal: In a press briefing right around his dismissal, Fedorov accused commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi of clinging to outdated tactics and favoring “backroom meetings and intrigues.” He then noted his own audit uncovered $6.6 billion in ministry overspending and that open tenders cut shell costs by 16%.

Why this matters

Fedorov is well liked and has leadership success to back it up. People credit him with securing Starlink access and shaping drone-led offensive strategy. On the other hand, critics point to his lack of military experience and call his reforms a rebranding of existing work.

Officials and analysts were surprised by the move, but attribute it to Zelenskyy’s pattern of prioritizing loyalty over merit.

With momentum beginning to tilt toward Ukraine, the shake-up raises doubts about command cohesion– and Zelenskyy’s fit for the job. Few people doubt his skill as a wartime leader, but questionable moves like these are beginning to stack up. “Zelenskyy’s usual shit,” one official said.
