The International Security Assistance Force – ISAF, as it’s known in Afghanistan – hasn’t been shy about its plans to “retake” Kandahar. But as with so many other operations in the country, there seems to be as much myth as there is fact about what the city is like, and what ISAF’s plans are for occupying it. As the second-largest city in Afghanistan, rich with history both for Pashtun rule in the country and as the Taliban’s birthplace, Kandahar holds tremendous symbolism.
