InSight Crime Internship Applications for Spring 2026 are DUE November 21, 2025!


InSight Crime’s internship program offers the opportunity to work for the leading source of news and analysis on organized crime in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Our internship program in the Data Monitoring and Analysis (MAD) Unit is designed for candidates interested in enhancing their skills in data collection, extraction, analysis, and visualization. This opportunity is ideal for those planning to work as data scientists in the humanities and social sciences fields and produce data-driven stories.
Internship Responsibilities:
- Collect, extract, analyze, and visualize quantitative data related to organized crime in the Americas.
- Propose and write data-driven articles for publication on the InSight Crime website.
- Attend daily editorial meetings, take notes, and ask questions to incorporate data into the articles discussed.
- Create graphic materials from quantitative databases.
- Update the organization’s existing databases.
Requirements:
- Work experience and/or expertise in coding, mathematics, data mining, cleaning, analysis, and visualization.
- Work experience and/or basic knowledge of a programming language such as Python, R, or JavaScript.
- Be a student of political science, economics, criminology, mathematics, or computer science.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish.
- Availability of at least 20 hours per week and commitment to work with the organization from early January through May for the spring term, May through August for the summer term, or September through December for the fall term.
- Interest in covering organized crime.
- Passion for data analysis.
- Attention to detail.
Desirable:
- Advanced Portuguese.
- Intermediate Python skills (pandas, NumPy, BeautifulSoup).
- Experience with front-end development for data (JavaScript, D3.js, HTML, and CSS).
- Git and GitHub management.
How to Apply:
Applications are open for three cycles that correspond to the US academic calendar: spring (January to May), summer (May to August), and fall (September to December). Applications must be submitted by December 1 for the spring term, by April 1 for the summer term, and by August 1 for the fall term.

The internship can be done remotely, but it is preferable for candidates to reside in Medellín, Colombia. It is unpaid, but we occasionally receive donations that allow us to provide small stipends.
