Remarks by Brigadier (Ret.) Dr. Ian Langford, PhD, Executive Director of Security & Defence PLuS:

In an era defined by accelerating strategic flux, the global security environment continues to shift at pace. The ongoing AUKUS review in Washington, the imminent UK carrier deployment to the Indo-Pacific, the grinding conflict in Ukraine, and rolling crises in Gaza and across the Middle East all underscore the growing strain on the international order. Meanwhile, the arms race across East and North Asia marked by increased missile testing, military modernisation, and technological contestation continues to escalate. Against this backdrop of volatility and competition, Security & Defence PLuS remains committed to advancing research, education, and strategic policy collaboration across its trilateral partnership.

From a major events perspective, planning is well underway for the next Future Security Forum scheduled for late October in Washington, DC, which will bring together leading voices from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to shape a common agenda on strategic risk and resilience [Register Interest→]. This activity will coincide with an S&D+ Seed Grant research wargame and crisis simulation activity, designed to test emerging ideas on integrated deterrence, escalation dynamics, and decision-making under pressure. These are precisely the kinds of practical, policy-relevant engagements that help bridge academic insight with operational need.

In addition, Security & Defence PLuS is pleased to confirm its upcoming strategic engagement with Kyoto University in November, which will open new avenues for Indo-Pacific cooperation and shared learning. This is the first step in a broader effort to deepen collaboration with key regional partners. Expect also some exciting news on several research grant initiatives currently being finalised.

Our sincere thanks to Professor Huw Davies for his outstanding leadership throughout the past two years chairing the Education Working Group. His guidance has helped shape the educational vision of our alliance and support the next generation of strategic thinkers. Huw hands over at a time where the S&D+ educational offerings begin to ‘go to market’ with several new short courses and Masters-level courses available soon.

As the pace of change continues to quicken, Security & Defence PLuS stands ready to support practical, forward-leaning responses to the world’s most pressing security challenges.

Warm regards,

Brig (R’td) Dr Ian Langford, DSC and Bars, PhD

Executive Director, Security & Defence PLuS
