President Barack Obama’s pick to lead the Pentagon hasn’t always been in sync with the tight messaging of the White House.
Ash Carter has not only advocated the preemptive bombing of North Korea — not exactly part of the Obama doctrine — he also helped then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta push to keep U.S. troops in Iraq after 2011. And he’s a critic of sequestration, the automatic spending cuts that Obama signed into law…
That’s not weird.
PS: I think part of the reason I like reading about foreign policy and military affairs is that it makes me feel normal, not eccentric, right in the middle of the bell curve. The other day I read an article in some defense journal on planes with robots and lasers. For ISIS, Al Q and the nuclear armed Russians and Chinese? Yeah, that’s not weird either.
