The Modern War Institute

The Modern War Institute (MWI) is a research center at West Point devoted to the rigorous study of contemporary conflict by convening interdisciplinary panels and speaker forums, providing rigorous policy-relevant research, and educating our future leaders on how to win on the modern battlefield.

“The Army continues to fight in cities and must prepare for all aspects of urban warfare.”

Current doctrine does not address the unique fabric of crowded urban areas of operation, though ongoing research aims to address these shortfalls.

“Yet, still, we don’t read doctrine. Why? Well, it’s complicated.”

“Continuing down a path of overly ambitious and unrealistic advising initiatives, coupled with restricted advising divorced from tactical realities will guarantee that we will lose.”

The arguments that the Army need not devote time, manpower, or money to better preparing to operate in megacities are not uniform in their objections.

Major Dan Maurer has a new book, Crisis, Agency, and Law in US Civil-Military Relations, scheduled for release by Palgrave Macmillan Press next month.
