A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea on Sunday, the South’s Unification Ministry said, in a rare case of one of Pyongyang’s elite defecting to Seoul. The military has not confirmed whether the soldier is a member of special forces or an officer.South Korea’s Ministry of Unification said it had been contacting the U.S. military and other allies about whom it should contact in the event that an agent was captured. It did not say whether it had reached out to China or Russia.A spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday that Seoul was going through “a process of verifying” his identity and background before deciding how to respond.
