NEWSWELL is growing a network of nonprofit newsrooms dedicated to their communities, made up of local journalists and supported by local community advisory boards. They offer shared services, innovative tools, and diversified revenue strategies to help local news thrive.

As they assist newsrooms, they do it with the community, listening, learning and offering ways to get involved. Each newsroom is for and of the community it serves, the entire community.

NEWSWELL is a nonprofit organization that is part of Arizona State University Media Enterprise, a collection of broadcast, digital, podcast and other media entities reimagining the future of news. NEWSWELL offers comprehensive wraparound services, business planning and professional training to our local newsrooms, helping them build sustainable business models that focus on and serve their communities.

NEWSWELL SUPPORTS ASU’s CHARTER:

“ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.”

On launch day, Mi-Ai Parrish, Managing Director of ASU Media Enterprise, had this to say on LinkedIn :

I am thrilled to officially share the launch of NEWSWELL at Arizona State University, our bold new nonprofit that seeks to strengthen and transform local news. We are beginning in California, in Stockton, San Diego and Santa Barbara. We are grateful to be entrusted with the gifts of Stocktonia, Times of San Diego, and (today!!) the Santa Barbara News-Press. Generous investments from individuals and large national funders are getting us out of the gate and seeing early success.

Just looking to save local journalism and protect democracy. No biggie. Can’t wait for what’s ahead.

“We are working with three local news sites as prototypes of our transformation process, with additional newspapers on deck.”
