Thomas R. McCabe

LtCol Thomas R. McCabe, USAFR (Ret), is a retired career analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense and a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve.  He worked for over ten years as a Middle East military analyst for the Air Force and as a counterterrorism analyst for two years. His articles on the Middle East and terrorism have been published in Parameters, Orbis, Middle East Quarterly, and Security and Democracy. ISIS has ambitious plans for continuing to stage attacks around the world. As part of this, we must consider the danger of ISIS organizing a terrorist underground in the West.  

A merger between ISIS and AQC looks unlikely at this point. Al Qaeda may well just be positioning itself to pick up as many ISIS assets as possible when convenient.

The extremely confused land war against ISIS in Syria and Iraq continues to grind on, with the current situation trending somewhat against ISIS in Iraq, less so in Syria.
