American Commandos Gear Up for New Shadow War With Russia

American Commandos Gear Up for New Shadow War With Russia by Eric Schmitt – New York Times

SZOLNOK, Hungary — Secretive, behind-the-lines mission rehearsals and other operations by 1,400 American and allied commandos to combat shifting Russian threats have laid bare a fundamental tension in the Trump administration: While the president courts Moscow, much of his government considers it an increasingly dangerous foe.

Just days before President Trump made light of Russia’s interference in American elections during a meeting last month with President Vladimir V. Putin, teams of Army Green Berets and Navy SEALs were practicing support missions for local resistance forces in Eastern Europe and the Baltics should they have to confront Russian commandos without insignia, the so-called little green men who helped Moscow seize Crimea in 2014.

Under a revamped Pentagon strategy to counter growing threats from Russia and China, American commandos are teaming up with partners on Europe’s eastern flank to thwart Russia’s so-called hybrid warfare, which allied officials say increasingly involves manipulating events using a mix of subterfuge, cyberattacks and information warfare. The threats hark back to Cold War-era intrigue, but so far are being fought with bytes and bandwidth, not bombs and bullets…

Provocative statement:

Putin, and indeed many of America's enemies; these folks have already won their "wars" against the U.S./the West.  Thus:

a.  Such things as "American Commandos Gearing Up for New Shadow War With Russia;" this, in reality,

b.  Is of no moment/is of no importance.

Explanation:

The beginning paragraph of our article above:

"SZOLNOK, Hungary — Secretive, behind-the-lines mission rehearsals and other operations by 1,400 American and allied commandos to combat shifting Russian threats have laid bare a fundamental tension in the Trump administration: While the president courts Moscow, much of his government considers it an increasingly dangerous foe."

As to why Trump would need to "court Moscow," consider the following from the "Conclusion" of John Mearsheimer's "Bound to Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Liberal International Order:"

"U.S. policymakers should ensure that they create a formidable bounded order that can contain Chinese expansion. That task mandates creating economic institutions such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and a military alliance in Asia that is similar to NATO during the Cold War. In the process, the United States should go to great lengths to pull Russia out of China's orbit and integrate it into the U.S.-led order."

Herein, and given Mearsheimer's such suggestion that the U.S. should "go to great lengths to pull Russia out of China's orbit," etc., should we consider that Trump has gone about as far as he can go -- for example -- with his massive "about-face"/"appeasement" initiative described below?:

President Donald Trump:

"We do not expect diverse countries to share the same cultures, traditions, or even systems of government, but we do expect all nations to uphold these two core sovereign duties: to respect the interests of their own people and the rights of every other sovereign nation.”

“Strong sovereign nations let diverse countries with different values, different cultures, and different dreams not just coexist, but work side by side on the basis of mutual respect.”

Bottom Line Thought -- Based on the Above:

Following the Old Cold War, Presidents George H.W. Bush through Obama (see the "mitpressjounal" article linked above) kept the "transforming outlying states and societies more along modern western political, economic, social and value lines"  "wolf"  at Putin's, and indeed others', doors.

With the coming of President Trump, however, this such  "wolf"  was formally locked up, muzzled and, indeed, may actually have been "killed" (Again, see the "mitpressjounal item linked above).

From this perspective, of course, such things as "American Commandos Gearing Up for New Shadow War With Russia" are of no moment and, indeed, would seem to be of little importance; this, given that:

a.  For all intents and purposes

b.  Putin (et. al) have already won their "wars" against the U.S./the West.

(After all, the objective of Putin's incursion into the Urkaine, etc. -- and for that matter OBL's attack on the World Trade Center -- this was to cause the U.S. to lock up, muzzle, and/or kill its "transformative" "wolf."

The problem here being, of course, that:

a.  The U.S./the West received nothing in exchange -- for example, the "pulling of Russia out of China's orbit and integrating it into the U.S.-led order" goal noted at my second quoted item at the top of this comment above -- this

b.  For this such "capitulation?")
