Foreign Policy Initiative’s 2016-2017 Future Leaders Program

The Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for its 2016-2017 Future Leaders Program. The purpose of the Future Leaders Program is to cultivate the next generation of foreign policy leaders in Washington, D.C. The program identifies young professionals who share FPI’s commitment to international engagement, support for America’s allies, expanding political and economic freedom, and a strong military. FPI connects these young leaders with foreign policy experts and former senior government officials, while offering networking opportunities with FPI experts and program alumni, as well as media personalities.

Program Description

The FPI Future Leaders Program will run from September 2016 to June 2017. The program offers off-the-record discussions with foreign policy luminaries, professional development workshops, and national security simulations. All events will take place in Washington, D.C. Additionally, participants will be invited to a variety of other events hosted by FPI. Former classes of Future Leaders can be found here: 2010, 2011201220132014, and 2015.

Requirements & Expectations

FPI is seeking the best and brightest young professionals between the ages of 25 and 35 working in government, academia, the military, media, and the private and non-profit sectors. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of professional experience or relevant graduate work. While U.S. citizenship is not required, we do ask that applicants live or work in the Washington, D.C. area. Applicants who are selected to participate will be expected to attend all program events, which will generally be scheduled on weekday evenings to accommodate work schedules. Before applying, please consider if your professional and personal obligations will allow you to fully participate.  Upon acceptance, a complete schedule of events for the year will be sent.

Application Process

Young professionals interested in applying for the FPI Future Leaders Program are asked to fill out the application form, which includes submitting the following materials:

  • Current resume
  • Letter of interest describing how the applicant will contribute to and benefit from the program
  • Letter of reference from a current or former employer or professor addressing the applicant’s intellectual and analytical abilities, foreign policy experience, and leadership qualities
  • The name, title, and affiliation of the person who will write the applicant's letter of reference

All application materials must be submitted in full by 5:00 PM on Friday, August 5, 2016. Applicants will be notified of their selection by August 29th and the program will begin in September.
