This site is changing.

We are upgrading our site, so there will be some change and some dust.  The end state will be more search, sort, comment, etc. features throughout the site, to better serve our users and the Small Wars community of interest.  We'll continue with the discussion on the Small Wars Council as our primary community forum, and the place where our members start the threads. We'll add new interactivity via blog-comment features on most of the content in the Small Wars Journal site, plus some some search features that have been lacking.

Phase 1 (just happened) -- we imported snapshots of our existing static content into our fancy new dynamic container.  This is an intermediate objective.  There is no new functionality yet, but the look is familiar despite a couple of quirks with some of the old pasted-in content.  We'll deal with tweaking that look later.  Our focus is on the functionality.

Phase 2 (going on now behind the scenes) -- we are porting the existing and new content over into the new blog containers to enable all that good functionality, and testing the new containers.  This will occur on it own darn schedule for each of the main elements of the site -- news, ref library, reading lists, links, magazine, events.  The new SWJ Blog is alive now, and we'll get it spooling up soon with some content.  When we reach critical mass, will enter Phase 3.

Phase 3 (TBD incrementally) --  When a page (e.g. magazine section, or SASO page of ref library) reaches critical mass (i.e. most of its stuff is up in the new container), we'll flip its new features on.  What you can expect to see occur, by section, is:

  • You'll see a new page with the active content, and hopefully be able to find the good stuff easier.
  • For a while, we'll include a link back to the legacy page (the one you're seeing now) for those old dogs.  But try the new tricks.
  • Old links should work indefinitely as we'll have permanent re-directs, but many URLs will change and it would be good of you to update your bookmarks.

In keeping with U.S. doctrine, we'll plan for Phase 4 later.

FAQs

The things we think you're thinking --

  • Why? -- To enable more interactivity, and to get you search/sort features, etc.
  • When? -- When we can.  We have day jobs.  This is an ongoing effort.
  • Will my old links work? -- Should do.  That's the plan anyway.  Something will get screwed up, and you can tell us about it.
  • Where is Jimmy Hoffa buried?  -- Wrong site for that.
