Small Wars Foundation is a Virginia nonprofit corporation whose purpose is:

  • to facilitate the exchange of information among practitioners, thought leaders, and students of small wars, in order to advance knowledge and capabilities in the field;
  • to assist in the creation, capture, sharing, and application of knowledge of small wars;
  • and ultimately to advance self-determination, freedom, and prosperity for those populations effected by the conduct of small wars.

Small Wars Foundation's current program activity is supporting the small wars community by operating Small Wars Journal. We are working to increase our capacity, enhance the services offered via Small Wars Journal, and add additional programs beyond the site consistent with the Foundation's exempt purposes.

Small Wars Foundation is governed by its Board of Directors.  The Directors are Dave Dilegge, Dan Kelly, Dave Maxwell, and Bill Nagle.

** Current Status of Federal Exemption **

Small Wars Foundation was founded in 2008 and was recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization; however, our federal exempt status was revoked for missing returns. We have filed (again) the missing returns and an application for reinstatement. The advisors and accountants we engaged have every belief that our exempt status will be resolved successfully and reinstated retroactively for, eventually, no interruption in our exempt status. However, pending the official IRS determination of such, we are not now exempt and donations made to the Foundation after Oct 29, 2013 are not, at present, tax deductible. We will update this page and notify the community when the situation changes.
