Egyptian historian and commentator Abdullah Imam has written intensively about Nasser and the early political decisions and personalities of Egypt’s Republic.  He is of the same caliber as the famous political historian and journalist Mohammed Hassanein Heikal, and Musa Sabry, helping Egyptians and Arab readers understand why Nasser, Amer, and others made the decisions they did.  An excellent book details the biography of Flight Commander Wagih Abaza, a member of the Free Officer’s that overthrew the Egyptian monarchy in 1952.  Imam’s 1995 book entitled, Wagih Abaza Safahat Min Al-Nidaal Al-Watani (Wagih Abaza: Pages from the Nationalist Struggle), published in Arabic by Arabiyah Printers and Publishers in Cairo, Egypt.  The introduction for the book was written by Mohammed Heikal, the historian and journalist with unprecedented access to Nasser’s papers and a prolific writer of the period.  The author takes Abaza’s life to explain the mechanics, decisions and actions of the 1952 military coup in Egypt, organization of guerilla operations against British forces in Egypt, getting weapons for the new Egyptian republic, and much more.  This work although published in Arabic is important for U.S. forces becoming more engaged in the Middle East.  It offers valuable lessons on revolutionary agitation and the response of key Arab leaders during crisis. It is vital that U.S. military planners focus on such Arabic works of military value with the same intensity that communist tactics were studied during the cold war.
