As the December review of our strategy in Afghanistan nears, one program that shows significant progress and will have a far reaching impact on this war torn nation is the Afghan National Security Force Literacy Program. This program's objective, overseen by NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan (NTM-A), is to provide every member of the Afghan National Security Force (ANSF), composed of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the Afghan National Police (ANP), a third grade level of literacy. To accomplish this, we employ more than 1,000 Afghans to teach Dari and Pashto the two dominant languages in this nation.

Dr. Mike Faughnan is the Chief of the NTM-A / CSTC-A Education Division. He is a former Army field artillery officer who became a civil servant in 2002. In previous positions he served as the Chief of Training Development and Staff Management and as the Program Manager, Noncommissioned Officer Education Systems for the Army Training and Doctrine Command. Dr. Faughnan holds a Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary in Virginia in Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership with an emphasis in Higher Education and a MA from the George Washington University in Educational Technology Leadership. He is a graduate of the National War College from which he holds a MA in National Security Strategy. He resides in Williamsburg, Virginia. Dr. Faughnan arrived in Kabul in July 2009 and having extended his tour, he is scheduled to return to the United States in January 2011.
