I have accepted a position on a project at U.S. Special Operations Command. As a result, I won't be available to continue writing the 'This Week at War' column for Foreign Policy and Small Wars Journal.
I am very grateful to Dave, Bill, and the people at Foreign Policy for giving me the opportunity to write this column, which I did for three years and nine months. Not everyone gets such a chance, and for that I feel lucky. I also thank my editors at FP, who always made me look better, and my readers for their support and for keeping me in line.
I am also giving up my position as Managing Editor of SWJ, but will maintain a small role behind the scenes. I may also have something to say every now and then on the blog.

A long ago former Navy Officer, I will miss your articles and the debates they encouraged. Rarely does anyone write about Naval strategy, tactics, force structure, and weapons systems and even when agreeing or disagreeing you did a great job of posing issues of current and future strategic and tactical problem scenarios today's and tomorrow's Navy will face -- something rarely discussed in print. Good Luck.

I told you privately, but I feel like I should put it out here publicly... You will be missed, seriously missed. When FP first approached SWJ about a regular column you were our unanimous choice, hands down (I had faithfully followed your blog thanks to Josh Manchester providing me a pointer). And you did not disappoint. You helped us take the site to a new level and offered up commentary that is recognized, appreciated, and oft quoted across the globe.
And of course, your SWJ log-on account remains open and will be so as long as SWJ exists. Whenever you get the urge please offer up your wisdom and insight. You done good Devil Dog, real good; and our appreciation for what you have contributed to us is not done justice by these humble words.
Congrats on the new gig and wishing you and yours fair winds and following seas.
