An Iraqi warlord captured by the SAS gave up unprecedented information on how Iran trained Shia militias to mount “full-scale warfare” against British and American troops, declassified US documents have revealed.

Qais al-Khazali is leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq, the League of the Righteous, a Shia militia that fought coalition troops after the invasion of 2003. More recently it fought alongside the West against Islamic State.

The warlord was captured in Basra in 2007, an action which prompted the retaliatory kidnapping of Peter Moore, a British IT worker in Baghdad, and four of his bodyguards.
