Major Niel Smith is an Armor officer and student at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in Small Group 13D.*
Niel developed an unhealthy interest in counterinsurgency after two long tours in Iraq as a company commander and staff officer. From 2007-2009 he served as the operations officer for the US Army and Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Center, founding the https://coin.army.mil series of websites and the COIN Center Blog, as well as leading COIN training. He regularly participates, blogs, and comments in online forums centered on COIN and defense issues. In addition to COIN interests, Niel has two combat deployments to Iraq as a company commander and staff officer. He has endured hardship tours in Germany and Hawaii. He received his commission through James Madison University ROTC in 1997 and is completing his master’s degree at Kansas State University in Security Studies. He posts on the Small Wars Council under the handle “Cavguy”. See some of my favorite Council discussions here! The opinions expressed are his and his alone. * Required as part of the CAC blogging policy.Articles and Blog Entries:
